FREE AFTER PARTY! 6:30pm-8:00pm

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can compete?

All climbers age 16 or older are welcome to compete; we’re planning to accommodate up to 200 competitors split across two sessions. For the sake of fair competition, youth climbers participating in Saturday’s USAC Bouldering QE won’t be allowed to compete in SBC as well.

What format is the competition?

This a redpoint bouldering competition meaning that each route has been assigned a unique point value that is largely based on the level of difficulty. Points are gained only if the route is completed. Participants will track each attempt, and for tie-breaking scenarios, will be deducted 1 point per attempt up to 25 attempts per climb. The participant’s score will be the sum total of their top 5 climbs.

We’ll have 35+ boulders available for you to climb, designed to challenge and thrill competitors at every skill level!

For Recreational competitors, there are no categories to sign up for before the competition. Instead flights will be created after the climbing session is over and will be based on the finishing order of all participants.

How do “flights” work for the recreational division?

Instead of self-selecting into a category at the time of registration or guessing which category is right for you, competitors will be placed into “flights” based on their overall performance. We believe this encourages every competitor to try their best and mitigates unsporting sandbagging. Once scoring is complete, flights will be generated and prizes will be awarded to the 3 top competitors in each flight.

For example, a competition with 200 competitors would result in 5 flights:

  • Flight A: 1st – 40th place
  • Flight B: 41st – 80th place
  • Flight C: 81st – 120th place
  • Flight D: 121st – 160th place
  • Flight E: 161st – 200th place

*The actual number of flights and number of competitors within each flight will be determined based on the total number of competitors.

Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finishers of each category. Participants do not need to be present to win.

How much does it cost?

Sign up early to save! Pre-registration prices are $35 for members and $45 for guests; ending Tuesday, 11/7 at midnight. Day of registrations will cost $60 for everyone.

How do I make sure that I get an SBC t-shirt?

The best way to ensure you get a t-shirt in your size is to purchase it during early bird sign ups. Pre-purchases for t-shirts close on October 23rd. We will order a limited number of shirts to purchase on a first come first served basis on the day of competition, but we do anticipate them to sell out. T-shirts will be sold for $20.

Can I watch but not compete?

Absolutely! Please come by anytime and stick around for Finals starting around 5pm! We expect the two earlier sessions to be pretty full, which might make spectating difficult. There’s going to be coffee throughout the day, and local vendors and a food truck in the afternoon, so come join us throughout the day!

Where should I park?

Parking at the gym will be limited — in addition to our lot and the gravel road behind the gym, there’s free parking at the Hiram Chittenden Locks a hundred yards west, and free on-street parallel parking on the streets and avenues north of the gym (28th through 32nd Avenues, 54th through 58th Streets).

Celebrate Pride

PRIDE 2023

Through conversations inspired and led by LGBTQ+ identifying staff and in collaboration with Queer Mountaineers and PFlag Bellevue Eastside, members of our staff-led DEI Advisory Committee have been working on ways to show support and create new connections with several events planned in June (National Pride Month) as well as July (Tacoma only).

Click the button for a full list of activities at each facility!
Pride events will appear in the green boxes or use the category option to sort by ‘Pride Month Events’.

COMMUNITY.

Together with professionalism, integrity and adventure, community is one of our core values. To us, it means “a welcoming group of climbing enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and friends connecting through our shared interests in climbing, fitness, and fun”.

Each Pride Month we take the opportunity to reflect on what we’ve done and still need to do for LGBTQ+ folks in our communities.

Why do we celebrate Pride Month?

We recognize that diversity fuels the spirit of our staff and community. Our commitment to equity and inclusion across race, gender, age, religion, identity and experience builds a culture where difference is valued, innovation thrives and adventure is accessible to all.

What are we doing to support the LGBTQ+ community?

We are proud to be creating brave + inclusive spaces where all climbers of any gender, identity or sexual orientation feel accepted;  where you can challenge yourself, build your skills and know that this is a place where you belong.

What steps are we taking to accomplish this?

  • Listening + responding to the needs of our staff, members + community
  • Maintaining hiring practices to recruit + retain a diverse staff team
  • Advancing a staff-led diversity, equity + inclusion committee
  • Hiring experts to help identify + navigate our strengths/opportunities through discussion and trainings
  • Building action steps to hold ourselves accountable to changes we want to see

What does this look like to our community:

  • Monthly Queer Climb Nights at all locations; hosted by Queer Mountaineers
  • Progress Pride flags in all facilities (year-round)
  • Period products in all bathrooms (year-round)
  • Pronouns on staff nametags
  • Access to gender affirming bathrooms in all facilities; with improvements to the Bellevue gym scheduled with facility updates and expansion
  • Gender inclusive categories for competitions
  • Celebrate Pride events + activities hosted at all locations during the month of June; and July in Tacoma
  • Redefining who a “climber” is, can and should be by building a better, more inclusive community for all

We’re listening.
