Critical Mass
Nov 16th, 2006, 3:42pm

For some of you that were asking:

The Critical Mass ride is on.   Smiley

Cool
WHEN: First friday of the month at 5:30pm, leaves the lot no later than 5:45pm
WHERE: Meet at the Lawn Bowling Green at Wright Park.
Cool

Bring costumes or noise makers, etc, etc and lots of friends!  Good times will ensue!

My goal, if I were to have one, would be to make people aware that Tacoma has bicycle commuters, and maybe get some more usable bike lanes.

If you don't know what critical mass is  Smiley, read this:

Quote:
Critical Mass is a monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists' right to the road...
Critical Mass has a different flavor from city to city -- there's a big variety in size, respect of traffic laws (or lack thereof), interaction with motorists, and intervention by police.

Critical Mass has no leaders, and no central organization licenses rides. In every city that has a CM ride, some locals simply picked a date, time, and location for the ride and publicized it, and thus the ride was born.

CM is an idea and an event, not an organization. You can't write to "Critical Mass."

Some CM riders try to tie up traffic as much as possible and be otherwise confrontational with motorists. Such riders are missing the point about Critical Mass. CM is a celebration of cycling, not a war against motorists.  CM is about asserting our right to the road, not denying others their right to the road. Those who want to play juvenile games are encouraged to stay at home instead.

After checking the critical-mass.org website, it appears that Antarctica has no rides.  They better get on top of things down there, errrrr, or up, depending on your point of view.    Smiley

Do I hear you putting on the 1st annual drunkin New Years ride?  That would be fun.  Maybe we could tie it in with the Goldfish ride.

Hmm... considering the group, I'd say the alternate plan is to go the pub and talk about cycling???   Roll Eyes

Ok, so just to make sure this old hippy has it straight.....

Do we ride AROUND Wright Park or in it? Riding IN Wright Park is out for me since I don't have a MTN bike and I don't want to ride over someone who takes their libations in the great outdoors (instead of in a warm cozy pub). Besides, from my understanding we are take over the roads (in a peaceful and groovy way). In that case, what is the route so that latecomers can join in the fun?

Also, being old enough to be you'alls Daddy, I gotta mention the need for some serious lighting, reflective stuff, helmets, etc. And probably a fair dose of Gore-Tex as well. This kind of admonishment would not be necessary in Seattle, Portland or some hip joint which has a cycling culture. But the average Tacoma cyclist is someone who rides due to medical, economic, or mental neceesity and is characterized by no helmet, sqeaky chain, cig in mouth, riding on the sidewalk, at night, dressed in black, with no lights. The exception is UPS students. They ride w/o cigs.
